Multisport (including triathlons & duathlons) is a sport where training is primarily done by the athlete without a coach.  Therefore it is important for those competing to understand the basics of how to put together workouts and prepare for a race.  Just like doing homework and studying for a test in school, we can give kids the material but they have to be able to apply it in order to succeed.

In our kids training plans, we will focus on concepts like:
  • Goal Setting
  • Time Management
  • Progress Review
We will try to provide guidelines and then it's up to the kids to stay motivated to complete their workouts each week (with adult supervision, of course).  Kids will begin to know if they have worked out enough to be prepared for each race.

We will not focus on timing.  As many endurance athletes know, your best race is not always your fastest.  It is crucial to understand the on-going needs of your body for fuel, hydration, and rest, as much as it is about keeping up with intense workouts.

Kids will keep a journal to monitor their progress each week.  When learning a new sport or skill, improvement comes rapidly and often without a great deal of effort.  An area we will focus on is goal setting and planning.  Kids will learn to evaluate their progress.  Then when they plateau they will learn what motivates them to begin improving again.

A few safety points:
  • Plans are recommended for ages 8 and up.
  • Kids should always be supervised by an adult while training.
  • Always wear closed toed shoes with rubber soles.
  • Always wear a correctly fitting helmet while riding your bike.
